Do you have missing teeth, failing bridges, or in need of a removal of a bad tooth? Just like many of our patients experienced for themselves, one of the best available treatment options may be through dental implants. When it comes to teeth, aesthetics is very important to most people. Having teeth that look less than their best often leads to feelings of low self-esteem that can negatively impact your life. Dental implants are becoming increasingly popular among informed patients who realize that this is a superior treatment option for replacing missing teeth.
We have put together this guide to walk you through important steps involved with receiving dental implants, from consultation to recovery. We want you to be able to make an informed decision that is based upon solid information.
A dental implant is an artificial structure consisting of three components that work together to replace a missing tooth. It consists of a titanium screw, which an abutment and crown are attached to. The titanium screw is inserted surgically within the jawbone by our periodontist specialist. The restoration on this screw is performed by your general dentist.
Dental implants are a superior treatment option for the restoration of lost teeth. Not only do they restore tooth functionality without damaging neighboring teeth, but they appear and function as real teeth. Of course, we always want to save your natural teeth. But if that is not possible, dental implants are a very close second choice.
Dental implants are also known for being long-lasting restoration. Due to metal to metal and metal to porcelain connections, there is no place for dental decay with this restoration. Good care for your dental implants is very important though. We will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your dental implants.
Dental implants are not appropriate for everyone. You must have sufficient jawbone mass to anchor the implant. Some patients have gone without a natural tooth for a long time, which leads to the jaw receding away in this area. However, many of these same patients can eventually receive a dental implant after undergoing a bone graft procedure. Of course, this adds another layer of complexity and additional expense, which is one reason why it is recommended that patients do not leave a tooth missing and untreated for a long period of time. You can consider dental bone graft procedure like a preparation of the good foundation for your dental implant. At Aesthetic Dental Center of Bergen County this procedure is typically performed by our periodontist specialist.
As we mentioned earlier, an implant requires sufficient bone mass to anchor it. We begin by thoroughly examining your mouth, jaw and teeth. In most cases, if your gums and bone are healthy, things proceed fairly easy from there.
The process occurs under local anesthesia.. Our periodontist and implant specialist will form an incision in the gum tissue and drill a hole to make room for your new implant. He will screw the titanium implant into this hole and will then stitch up the hole to prevent infection.
At this point, we simply wait. It can take three to six months for the healing process to complete. This period allows your jawbone to grow and fuse around your new implant. Once this integration takes place, we install an abutment, which is an intermediary component that allows a dental crown to be placed onto your dental implant.
The dental crown represents the tip of the iceberg. This is the visible part of your dental implant which replaces your lost tooth. Crowns provide an effective alternative to original teeth, retaining functionality and appearance. We can also carefully craft your crown to closely match the color of your original tooth and surrounding teeth.

“I was seen a little earlier than my scheduled appointment so that was a plus. The dental office was immaculate! My tooth extraction was done in less than 5 minutes. I didn’t even realize it was out until he said ok all done!! Absolutely no pain, no pressure! The oral surgeon was brilliant! I’ll highly recommend this a million times!!”

“Dr. Jennie Lee was very patient and so good with my 4-yr-old son. He was at ease and sat through the whole filling treatment without any difficulty. They were very accommodating to his needs and didn't give him any unnecessary treatment just to take your money. Highly recommend!! Staff is friendly as well.”
